Construction began this week on a project to widen a portion of Central Avenue between Bartow Road and Bella Vista Road in McKinleyville,
During construction, the roadway will be open only to northbound traffic. Those wishing to travel southbound on Central in the work area will have to take a detour, such as School Road.
The Humboldt County Department of Public Works awarded a construction contract to Kernen Construction to widen and construct new paved shoulders on the east and west sides of Central Avenue generally between Bartow Road and Bella Vista Road.
The goal of the project, according to the county, is to improve safety for bicyclists, pedestrians, and motorists through this section of Central Ave.
Construction activities began Monday, June 17 with a completion date of approximately July 19. This project will require the contractor to perform various construction activities along the shoulder of Central Ave.
The contractor will use various traffic control systems for shoulder and lane closures during the project such as detours, lane closures, and flaggers.
Only northbound traffic on Central Ave. will be allowed through the construction zone. Southbound traffic on Central Ave. will be detoured to School Rd.
Local resident traffic will be allowed on Bartow Road and Bella Vista Road.
“We ask that you drive slowly and cautiously through the construction site and utilize the School Road detour during the construction period,” stated a press release from the county.
