Ready for an emergency are, from left, Westhaven Volunteer Fire Department members Joshua Scollard, Assistant Chief; Chief Shawn Worth, EMT ; Jerome Simone and Bobbie Fulton. The department’s biggest fund raiser of the year is this Sunday. All you need to do to help out the WVFD is show up and eat pie.

They’ve outdone themselves this year.  Those pie-baking ladies at the Westhaven Fire Hall have baked 787 blackberry pies, 100 huckleberry pies and have canned over 400 jars of blackberry jam and jelly and huckleberry jam.

It’s all for the annual Blackberry Festival, Sunday, July 28 to support the Westhaven Volunteer Fire Department. You know, those heroes who come to your house and put out a fire, treat your loved one who is injured or ill, or pull you out of your car after an accident.  Those guys.

The festival is their major fundraiser of the year and proceeds keep “fuel in the firetrucks,” according to  Fire Chief Paul Rosenblatt.

So come out and eat barbecue hamburgers and hot dogs, peruse the crafts booths, listen to  live music, and toast the firefighters with microbrew beer or Moonstone Crossing wines.

Not to mention pies by the slice, pie with ice cream, blackberry sundaes, or whole pies to take home.

The fire hall is on Sixth Avenue and the festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  No dogs please, and be kind to the neighbors when you park.

Traditionally the neighbors and the Westhaven Center for the Arts down the street have yard sales on the same day.

Children’s activities are scheduled but local children know that climbing on the fire engines and taking tours of the fire hall with firefighters Bobbie Fulton and Joshua Scollard are the best activities of the day.

“Our fire department is funded solely by donations, so we appreciate the support,” Chief Rosenblatt said

  1. Sorry Sally. I’ve been there, but I don’t recall the layout. Perhaps someone else familiar with the fire hall can inform us.
