Well, it’s been too long since I’ve written a McKinleyville Senior Center column for the McKinleyville Press. Between the Holidays and a major bout of the flu for me there have been no columns.
If you are unfamiliar with the center, drop by; we are located at 1620 Pickett Road in McKinleyville. The center is geared for everyone 50+ years old. We have a monthly calendar that details all of the activities are offered at the center. We have a room in Azalea Hall. We offer a full range of groups and classes from exercise and tai chi to computers, pinochle and needlework.
We also have a medical supply closet that has items like crutches, canes, walkers. wheelchairs, bath benches and commodes that we lend. We don’t always have all items so if you are in need please call 839-0191 to see what we have available.
The Tax preparation people are here every Monday through the end of March and appointment slots are limited. To schedule your appointment please call 839-0191 Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.
The center is a non-profit that receives no state or federal support. We have no membership fees and don’t charge for most of our classes. We rely on donations of money, time, soft cover books, puzzles and small items for our 25 cent shelf for meeting our financial needs.
The center is manned by approximately 40 volunteers to teach the groups, handle the reception desk, cook our monthly luncheons, pick up bread and Starbucks donations and set-up bingo. They also help with the upcoming plant sale and other fund raisers.
Now is the time to reserve your spot for the March luncheon. On March 20 will be honoring center participants who are 90+ years old. We will be serving corned beef and cabbage with the rest of the traditional fixings. The cost will be $5 per person. 90+ year olds will eat free. Please reserve your spot by 4pm Friday March 15th by calling 839-0191.
