McKinleyville High School students Matthew LaBelle and Jace Jackson, seniors in the International Bacchalaureate (IB) program, are organizing a local table tennis tournament named “Pong for a Cure.”
The event is a fundraiser for the Humboldt Community Breast Health Project, a non-profit organization committed to providing support and education for those facing a breast health concern, gynecologic cancer concern, or diagnosis of breast or gynecologic cancer.
The tournament will be held on Sunday, March 17 at the Arcata Community Center Gym. Registration starts at noon for six competitive events: Beginnners (beginning at 1:15 pm), Juniors 16 & under (beginning at 2:00 pm), Seniors 60+ (beginning at 2:00 pm), Intermediate (beginning at 2:45 pm), Scramble Doubles (beginning at 3:30 pm), and Advanced (beginning at 4:30 pm). Each participant is guaranteed at least three matches in each round robin, followed by a single elimination bracket. The cost is $15 for one event (including a tournament T-shirt and free entry to a scramble doubles event) with $10 per any additional event. Finalists will recieve prizes from one of the tournament’s sponsors including: Bayfront Restaurant, Belle Starr Clothing, The City of Arcata, and Pete’s Personal Training and Massage (to name a few).
