Marilyn St. John
On June 19, 2013, Marilyn, while asleep, slipped the surly bonds of earth and reached out to touch the face of God. Though she had been fighting cancer for some time, it did not defeat her.
She had a joy of life, a heart of purest gold, and
a love for all she met. Any you ask will tell you she was a gem of rarest value. She is survived by two brothers, a sister, four children, numerous grandchildren, (I always lose count) ten great-grandchildren, and her mother, Frances Grandov, who turned a powerhouse 99 just last month. Oh! And me, Kent Merrill, her loving husband of 27 years.
She would ask no flowers be sacrificed, but if you could make a donation to the ACS, she would beam some of her vast love in your direction. A celebration of her life is being planned on or around the Forth of July, a national holiday. She deserves no less. Call Kent if you wish to attend.
Lord I miss her so!
Floyd William Odom
Floyd (Joe) William Odom, 64, passed away peacefully at his home in McKinleyville, Calif., on June 13, 2013. He was born on May 26, 1949 in Exeter, Calif.
He came to Humboldt County at a young age and lived there the rest of his life. He drove truck for a living and enjoyed it. He served our country in the Army and fought in the Vietnam War. He was very proud to be a Vietnam Vet even though it came with hardships.
He grew up on the Peninsula and made many life-long friends. He has always loved Humboldt County and the memories he made here. Joe had a love for cars and motorcycles. He was always working on some old car or planning a trip on his Harley. He loved sitting around playing cards and bullshitting with his friends.
He was a hard worker and good provider for his family. He will be missed by many loved ones and cherished friends. Joe was preceded in death by his father Walter (Buster) Odom; mother Ruby Odom; two treasured sisters: Dean Humphrey and Pamela Odom; an infant son who he will be reunited with, and many lost friends.
He is survived by his beloved daughter Jessie Jolena McAlister and her family; his son Darrel Dwayne Odom and his children; two step daughters Rayanna Tatom and Roxanne Flowers and their families; and also by Raydell Eacret, his best friend and mother of his daughters.
