Mysterious device destroyed at ACV

Early last week a custodian found a suspicious object that looked like an explosive device at the Arcata-Eureka-Trinidad-Orick International Redwood Coast Regional Humboldt County Municipal Airport in McKinleyville.

At about 6:15 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 30, a Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the airport was notified by the airport custodian of a suspicious object located under a vending machine in the airport.

The object was approximately 1 1/4 inches by 1 1/2  inches in size and looked like a large flat nosed projectile. The object looked similar to a military type explosive. The deputy removed it from the terminal area.

The Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad was notified and responded to the airport. The device was destroyed by a bomb technician at approximately 9:30 p.m. in a dirt lot located at the airport. It is still unknown exactly what the suspicious device was.
