McK MATTERS: Highway history presentation at Dow’s Prairie Grange

The third and final summer history program sponsored by Pierson’s and Dow’s Prairie Grange will be on Friday, Aug. 23 and is entitled “Highway.”

mckmattersboxLocal historian Jerry Rohde will give his presentation called “Highway” which features the famous route through the redwoods along the section from Richardson Grove to Del Norte County.  This was the original Redwood Highway that brought tourists, trucks, and all types of travelers from San Francisco Bay to Humboldt Bay and beyond.  Postcards and photos from this bygone time of travel will depict our natural beauty.

The program is free and open to the community.  Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the program will begin at 7 p.m.  This is the last of three local history presentations sponsored by Pierson’s and hosted by the Dow’s Prairie Grange that took place of the summer.  The Grange is located at 3995 Dow’s Prairie Road in McKinleyville.

The Bumpers

The McKinleyville Low Vision Support group “The Bumpers” invites people with or without low vision to join them Monday, Aug. 26, 10 to 11 a.m., Azalea Hall 1620 Pickett Road, McKinleyville.

The group will discuss “Is There Life after Driving?” transportation options when you can’t see to drive.

Vacancies on Rec Committee

The McKinleyville Community Services District (MCSD) announces one regular vacancy and one alternate vacancy on its Recreation Advisory Committee (RAC).  The purpose of the RAC is to make recommendations to the MCSD Board of Directors regarding plans, policies, programs, and projects relating to McKinleyville’s parks, facilities, open space maintenance zones, and recreation activities. The current vacancy terms are for two years.  Members must be a resident within the MCSD service area and are appointed by the MCSD Board of Directors. Interested individuals should file a letter of application that states their interests and qualifications.

Box 2037, McKinleyville, CA 95519.  For additional information, please contact the Parks & Recreation Office at 839-9003.  Recreation Advisory Committee meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 pm at the MCSD Conference Room (1656 Sutter Road) and the public is welcome to attend.
