Mack High student hauled off to Juve Hall after trash can fire

A McKinleyville High School student was arrested on suspicion of arson Tuesday after a trash can was lit on fire in a bathroom at the school.

The Arcata Fire Department responded to the fire Tuesday afternoon, May 7 at Mack High and quickly extinguished the blaze. The fire was confined to the bathroom and caused an estimated $4,000 in damage.

AFD, in conjunction with the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, conducted an investigation and found the student allegedly responsible for the setting the fire, The student, whose name was not released because of his age, was transported to Juvenile Hall and booked on two counts of allegedly violating Penal Code 451(d), which covers arson to property,

“This fire could have killed or seriously injured a student or staff member or caused the death of a firefighter,” said Assistant Fire Chief Desmond Cowan. “Actions such as these are not pranks – they are crimes and will be dealt with as criminal matters.”
