Goodbye to Bigfoot Gas Station

The Bigfoot Gas Station at Murray Road and Central Avenue in Mckinleyville closed down last Thursday. A spokesman for Big Oil & Tire, which owns the gas station, could not be reached by press time. However, an employee at the station said that the station needed some costly repairs, Rather than make the investment, it was decided to close the station permanently.

Bigfoot Gas featured one of the best murals ever painted in Humboldt County. Then some changes were made. After that the mural was good, but not as good. The source of this photo is unknown. It was posted somewhere on the internet and ended up in our archives.

  1. I remember getting gas there in 1970 before there was a cover over the pumps since it was the only unbranded–read cheaper–gas in the County. 27 cents a gallon compared with 35 cents a gallon. The station where the Arcata US Bank is now was about as cheap.

  2. Please pray for Shirley from Bigfoot. She has been in the hospital for a month. Friends would like to start a fund for her to help pay her rent and feed her dogs. Anyone who would like to help please reply with contact information. She has touched so many people’s lives working there for so many years the least we can do as a community is try to help her. If you can’t financially then please send all the prayers you can she desperately needs them. Come on Humbodlt county let’s get behind this cause.
