(The following was submitted by the McKinleyville Land Trust.)
The McKinleyville Land Trust welcomes everyone to a celebration of Chah-GAH-Cho, 9.4 acres of woods and prairie open to the public behind Mill Creek Marketplace, on Saturday, July 20. The party begins at noon and goes until 3 p.m.
Biologists and botanists will guide tours, but people are free to explore on their own. Hot dogs, burgers, beer, soft drinks and cookies will be available by donation, proceeds of which will go toward improvements at Chah-GAH-Cho.
You can dance to the music and enjoy a sweeping view of the Mad River and the ocean. You can explore the proposed trail corridors, and learn the history of this land.
To find Chah-GAH-Cho, take School Road to Betty Court, which runs by the Mill Creek Cinema. Go to the end of Betty Ct, park, and follow signs to the party.
The McKinleyville Land Trust (MLT) acts on the belief that natural outdoor spaces are good for the physical and mental health of people of all ages. Children learn better, feel calmer, and are generally happier if they spend time in a natural outdoor environment, and the more undeveloped and complex the natural system is, the greater the benefits. Towns, especially, need open green places where people can come easily and regularly to immerse themselves in the natural world.
The vision for Chah-GAH-Cho is a place for jogging, walking your dog, gazing at views, and enjoying nature in a variety of ways. Students can do science projects; residents can practice Citizen Science projects; artists can be inspired and inspire.
To this end, the MLT is planning a minimum of development consistent with making the area safe and welcoming for the community. The MLT plans to build trails and set up signs, doggi pots, bike racks, and benches to make Chah-GAH-Cho more visible and available to the community. The cost will be approximately $30,000, about a third of which has been raised.
