In a promotional ceremony and badge pinning attended by a crowd of family and friends on March 26, the Arcata Fire District promoted three personnel to the rank of Fire Captain. Interim Fire Chief Justin McDonald noted, “These three Fire Captains come to us with experience, knowledge, and skill to do the job.
They have risen to the top in our process and represent the finest qualities of fire service professionals. We are very proud to have them working with us.”
Fire Captain Jon Busher is a fourth generation firefighter who grew up in the Shasta County area and became a career employee of the Arcata Fire District in 2007. He also works as a paramedic at Arcata-Mad River Ambulance. John is married to Megan and lives in the McKinleyville area.
Fire Captain Angela Dernedde grew up in the Susanville area and graduated with honors from Humboldt State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Kinesiology. Angie worked for CalFire before becoming a volunteer with Arcata in 1997. She was selected as the Volunteer Firefighter of the year in 2000 and was hired by the District as a career employee in 2008. Angie is married, has two sons, Henry and Oscar, and lives in the Arcata area.
Fire Captain Alex Manousos grew up in the Bay Area and came to Humboldt County to go to school. He became a volunteer with Arcata in 2003 and was hired as a career employee in 2007. Alex and his wife Lesley enjoy traveling and cooking. They live in the McKinleyville area.
According to Assistant Chief Desmond Cowan, “Our three new Captains occupy a key leadership role in the organization. They’ve earned the rank through their hard work and dedication and they represent the future of our
organization and the positive changes that we’ve made in the last few years.”
